Watch out for QR Code scams!

QR codes are all around us. Unfortunately, so are the scammers. Fraudulent codes are being used to send individuals to illegitimate websites where they attempt to steal your information. The false images are usually posted in high traffic areas, or they are sent by text, email or snail mail. They will often pretend to be a government agency or a financial institution. Here at the Credit Union, we will NEVER call, text or email to ask for you log in credentials or personal information. If you receive a message that appears to be from us asking for personal information, please call us at 215-822-9119.

Since QR codes are a part of our everyday life now, we often scan them without paying attention to where we are being directed. Always check the URL before clicking to proceed (you can do this by hovering over the code with your phone’s camera to view the link without clicking it)

Tips to avoid the risks –

·         Don’t always trust the display name, criminals can fake the name to appear legit

·         Misspelled words or typos often appear in fraudulent messages

·         If the code is in a public place look for signs of tampering or stickers placed on top

·         If you weren’t expecting the email or text message – don’t scan the code!

·         Logos can be copied, that does not always mean it is the proper source

·         If something feels off, call the company at a number you already know to be accurate

·         Offers that seem “too good to be true” or insist you to act immediately are often scams

·         Government agencies will not send you text messages asking for payment
